HTML

HTML stands for hypertext markup language. It is the most basic language for website construction.

HTML is not the easiest way to build a website. However, mentally it is the most stimulating. And it can be rewarding and fun.

HTML requires precision. The slightest error will often stop the browser in its tracks. HTML requires planning, perspective, analysis, and focus. When creating a web page in HTML, persistent, focused concentration is required. It is just the kind of mental activity that researchers tell us may help us avoid or delay dementia.

However, there is nothing difficult about html. Although it may involve learning many things, none of it is difficult to learn. And the new learning may have volume, but it is not complicated. And HTML does make sense. Each component of HTML has a purpose which can be easily understood.

To get started, first printout the HTML tutorial by clciking Here. This is a MS Word document.

Then you need a website. There a a lot of free web servers from which to choose. After looking around, I selected WebEdit. It seems to have a good file manager, and few ads. Follow these instructions and you will be into your file manager in a matter of minutes.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR GETTING YOUR FREE WEBSITE

Go to webs.com select your website type (personal) then click "get started."

Choose your website address, title and category.

For # 3, "Select a template for your site," do not select a template, but click "Use html mode only." Templates are for sissies!

Type in the challenge words and continue to the "next step."

This brings you to a page titled "Select a Webs package to match your needs." Click "no thanks, continue." This will take you to your file manager.

At the file manager, select the index.htm file and click edit. This is done by placing a check in the box before the name "index.htm" and clicking on the pencil. This will open your index.htm file. *{Note: index.htm and index.html are produced and used interchangeably. They will both be the default home page when a url (universal resource location--web address) is placed into the url (universal resource locator) box. However, they are not exactly the same. Typing in "index.html" when your file contains "index.htm" will bring forth nothing but an error notice. However, this is nothing to worry about, just a little point of confusion. If this makes no sense, ignore it. Needless to say, if you enter a url such as, http://diogenesbob.webs.com into the url box, which ever is in that file will be read and produced by the browser.} Now back to business.

Erase all the html you find in that file and, using your printed Basic Html material, construct your webpage.

Look luck! Should you need help, email me or call me at (318) 453-6273 before 9 PM Central.

After you get your page up and running, email me your url so I can look at it.
